Set against the backdrop of NASA’s 1980s Space Shuttle program in Houston, Texas, Atmosphere follows Joan Goodwin, a brilliant professor of astrophysics who seizes a historic opportunity when NASA opens its astronaut training program to women for the first time. Driven and resilient, Joan navigates intense physical training, systemic gender bias, and delicate family obligations—particularly looking after her niece, Frances.  

During candidate training, Joan forms an intense bond with fellow candidate Vanessa Ford, an enigmatic aeronautical engineer. As their connection deepens into a secret romance, both women must navigate the acute dangers of homophobia within NASA, knowing an exposed relationship could instantly end their careers.  

The narrative flips between the early 1980s training years and a harrowing crisis on December 29, 1984. While serving as CAPCOM in Mission Control, Joan is the sole voice communicating with the shuttle Navigator after a catastrophic malfunction leaves three crew members dead and one critically injured. With Vanessa as the only conscious astronaut aboard the damaged vessel, Joan must guide her through a life-or-death deorbiting re-entry. Atmosphere weaves high-stakes suspense, emotional warmth, and historical detail to explore ambition, sacrifice, and love.
